Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for an end to derogatory remarks and historical distortions regarding the legacy of Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah, emphasizing his significant role in Ghana’s political development.
His remarks, delivered at the 60th Anniversary Remembrance Service at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Kyebi on March 9, come in response to allegations that Tamale Central MP, Murtala Mohammed, had labeled Danquah a “traitor” and a “CIA operative” during parliamentary proceedings on February 4.
The comments have sparked controversy, leading the Coalition for Youth Development in Okyeman to petition the Speaker of Parliament. Akufo-Addo launched a collection of 60 commemorative statements honoring Danquah’s contributions to Ghana’s democracy, stressing that his advocacy for the rule of law remains central to the country’s governance.
Joining the call for respect, Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin condemned the derogatory remarks and urged Ghanaians to reject hate speech and division.
“Let us denounce hate campaigns, regardless of their targets, and put the love and dignity of Ghana and Africa above all differences,” he stated. Similarly, the Overlord of Akyem Abuakwa, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, emphasized the need to preserve Danquah’s legacy, criticizing efforts to tarnish his reputation.
“Some individuals continue to spread malice, mischief, and willful ignorance to defame him, but we must not allow that to happen,” he stated.
The remembrance event served as a rallying point for national unity, urging Ghanaians to acknowledge and honor the contributions of historical figures in shaping the nation’s democracy.
