On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, a total of 123 member states at the United Nations General Assembly threw their support behind a landmark motion on slavery reparations introduced by John Dramani Mahama

The resolution urges the global body to formally acknowledge the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade as the most egregious crime ever committed against humanity, a move that has sparked renewed global conversation on historical justice and accountability.

After intense deliberations, the motion secured 123 votes in favour. However, it faced opposition from three countries — the United States, Argentina, and Israel — while 52 others chose to abstain from the vote.
