The National Media Commission (NMC) has directed the Board of Directors of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to formally inform all staff about the renewal of the contract of the corporation’s Director-General, Professor Amin Alhassan.
In a letter addressed to the Board Chairman, the Executive Secretary of the NMC, Mr. George Sarpong, confirmed that Prof. Alhassan’s contract had been renewed on February 26, 2024, and publicly announced during the inauguration of the new GBC Board on August 13, 2024.
However, recent media reports indicate that some GBC employees were unaware of the renewal, prompting the NMC’s call for immediate communication.
The directive comes amid rising tensions between GBC’s unionized staff and management. The union has demanded Prof. Alhassan’s removal, arguing that he does not align with the aspirations of the corporation’s workforce.
At a March 20, 2025, press conference, GBC Local Union Chairman, Sam Nat Kevor, declared the Director-General “an unwelcomed person,” criticizing the NMC for allowing him to remain in office for 17 months beyond his official tenure without clear communication to staff.
The union has also called for a forensic audit into the corporation’s financial transactions, including investigations into internally generated funds, compensation for workers during major sporting events, and the handling of GBC-owned lands.
Prof. Alhassan, however, has dismissed the allegations, insisting that his leadership has significantly improved GBC’s financial position.
He refuted claims of mismanagement and accused the union of failing to engage management through proper channels. “The only objective of the leader of the union is to see the DG out of office,” he said, adding that they lack an understanding of media management.
He further asserted that under his tenure, GBC’s revenue had increased by 50%, and no unauthorized land transactions had taken place. Despite the ongoing dispute, the NMC has assured its commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure stability at the state broadcaster.
