The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed students of the Accra Newtown Experimental D/A School to stay away from campus following the collapse of part of the school’s structure, an incident that has claimed three lives and left 20 others seriously injured.

The directive, issued as an immediate safety measure, comes amid growing concerns over the structural integrity of buildings within the school.

According to the Director-General of GES, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, in an announcement on Monday, March 30, 2026, after holding a briefing with security officials at the scene, He indicated that the Service will convene an emergency meeting to assess the situation and determine the way forward.

Until a full safety assessment is completed, students have been asked not to report to school.

“We are going to work with the regional and the national team, so we will work with the estate department to ensure that the other structure is indeed fit for that purpose. If they are not, we will advise the students not to go into such areas,” Prof. Davis said.

The tragic incident has intensified public concern over the safety of school infrastructure, particularly in densely populated areas. Authorities are expected to carry out urgent inspections on remaining structures at the school to avert any further loss of life.

Meanwhile, investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing, as stakeholders call for stricter enforcement of building safety standards across educational institutions.
