The Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu has revealed that almost GH¢2.1 million had been retrieved from the overpaid GHS 2,321,042 to caterers in the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP).
This was reveled in the released Performance Audit Report by the Auditor-General on the management of GSFP.
The report is in accordance with Article 187(2) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, Sections 13(e) and 16 of the Audit Service Act, 2000 (Act 584) to present to Ghanaians a performance audit report on the Management of the Ghana School Feeding Programme.
“From July to August 2017, there was about GH¢2.5 million overpayment to some caterers across the country of which almost GH¢2.1 million had been retrieved,” the report read.
“Also, the Programme has provided employment to over 10,850 caterers and over 32,000 cooks since its implementation,” the report highlighted.
Despite the successes of the GSFP achieved in increasing enrolment, it continued to face some challenges including threats and demonstrations from dissatisfied caterers over delayed payments.
There was also a general concern among the public regarding the nutritional value of food provided by the caterers.
The Government of Ghana (GoG) with the assistance of the Royal Netherlands Embassy, and the World Food Programme (WFP) introduced the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) in 2005.
The Programme seeks to enhance food security, improve nutrition, reduce hunger and poverty. It ultimately, seeks to provide inclusive and equitable quality education opportunities in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
