Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly criticized the Mahama administration, describing its governance approach as authoritarian and a threat to Ghana’s democracy.
Speaking at a press conference to assess President John Dramani Mahama’s performance in his first 120 days, Afenyo-Markin stated, “Ghana is not a hierarchy; we will not allow one man to rule for life.”
He accused the President of stifling reforms and attempting to entrench himself in power through undemocratic means.
According to the Minority Leader, the administration has resorted to harassment and intimidation tactics to silence dissent.
“Journalists are being harassed, opposition MPs are being targeted,” he claimed, referencing an incident in which he alleged National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) operatives stormed his residence with firearms.
He also lamented that anyone who questions the government’s motives faces threats, warning that the current atmosphere endangers press freedom and multiparty democracy.
Afenyo-Markin warned that the government’s actions are not rooted in constitutional reform but are a veiled attempt to solidify President Mahama’s hold on power.
“What they are doing is not constitutional reform; they are trying to create a Trojan horse in favour of the President’s third-term ambition,” he argued.
He vowed that the Minority in Parliament would resist any such efforts and ensure Ghana remains a democratic state governed by checks and balances.
