Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, has reaffirmed the nation’s dedication to upholding peace ahead of the anticipated December 7 elections.
Speaking at the UN Day flag-raising ceremony on October 24, 2024, he emphasized, “Our theme for this anniversary, ‘Working together towards Peace and Sustainable Development in Ghana for present and future generations,’ was chosen…to emphasize the vital importance of ensuring that peace would prevail before, during, and after the upcoming general elections.”
The theme resonates with global calls for unity as outlined by the United Nations, reflecting Ghana’s intent to fortify peace during these crucial times.
Highlighting Ghana’s ongoing leadership in peace and sustainable development, Hon. Ampratwum-Sarpong spoke passionately about the global challenges that threaten these ideals, such as climate change and economic disparities.
“As we gather here today, conflicts and humanitarian crises continue to pose threats to international peace,” he noted, adding that Ghana remains steadfast in its commitment to the UN Charter’s principles.
Stressing the importance of diplomacy and cooperation, he urged nations to bring warring parties to the table, aiming for lasting resolutions that secure a stable future. Ghana’s active collaboration with the UN, he said, reflects a shared vision for a world where sustainable development flourishes.
The ceremony was attended by the UN Resident Coordinator, representatives of the Ghana Armed Forces, National Peace Council leaders, and other Civil Society Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations.
This year celebration featured a range of activities to commemorate UN Day in Ghana, including a Peace Walk, a Model UN event for high school students, and this Flag-Raising Ceremony, followed by a Photo Exhibition.
