The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a stern warning to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) against any attempts to prevent Ghanaians living in Togo from participating in the upcoming general elections.
NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia made this declaration during a rally in Ziope, located in the Agotime Ziope Constituency, which shares a border with Togo.
He emphasized that the NDC will confront any discriminatory actions aimed at restricting these citizens from returning home to vote, stating, “We shall not accept that discrimination.”
Asiedu Nketia questioned the motivations behind the Representation of the People (Amendment) Law (ROPAL), recently passed by the NPP.
He highlighted the inconsistency in the government’s stance, pointing out, “So the logic they want us to understand is that if you are a Ghanaian and you are living in America and you fly to Kotoka International Airport, they will allow you to go and vote but if you are Ghanaian living in Togo and you want to come and vote in your hometown, that one you are a Togolese, you are a stranger so we must not allow you to vote.”
He urged voters to remain vigilant against any schemes by the NPP to suppress votes from those crossing the border.
Nketia called upon the electorate in Agotime Ziope, a traditional stronghold of the NDC, to take action on December 7, 2024, urging them to vote for the party to free themselves from ongoing hardships.
“You suffer most when NPP is in power, and if you want to continue living under that suffering, it is up to you,” he stressed.
Agotime Ziope’s NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Charles Agbeve, encouraged constituents to turn out in large numbers to achieve the party’s goal of securing 25,000 votes in the upcoming elections.
