The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has elected two leading lawyers in Ghana Efua Ghartey and Victoria Barth as its next President and Vice President respectively.
Efua Ghartey, a seasoned lawyer with over 30 years of experience, won the presidency with 54.24% of the votes, surpassing her rival Agbesi Dzakpasu.
Victoria Barth, a prominent legal professional recognized for her contributions and academic mentorship, secured the vice presidency with a commanding 68.87% of the votes against Ebenezer Kwatoo.
This election, held at the GBA’s annual general conference on September 11, 2024, at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), marks a historic shift from a male-dominated leadership structure.
Ghartey’s persistent efforts and advocacy for women’s rights have made her a symbol of progress within the Bar Association, while Barth’s reputation and mentorship have earned her widespread support, particularly from younger lawyers.
As Ghartey succeeds Yaw Acheampong Boafo, who served the GBA since September 2021, this momentous change signifies a new era for the association.
The conference, themed “Peaceful, Fair and Transparent Election: The Key to Sustainable Democracy,” celebrates the appointment of Ghartey and Barth, reflecting a pivotal move towards a more inclusive and progressive leadership.
