The Student Representative Council (SRC) elections at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), initially scheduled for Wednesday, April 24, have been suspended following a court injunction filed by presidential candidate Bismark Abusa.
The injunction, served on the GIMPA SRC and its Electoral Commission, stems from the disqualification of Abusa’s running mate, Sergio Thompson, for allegedly holding an executive position and failing to resign prior to filing his nomination—an action the Commission deemed a breach of the SRC Constitution.
Two of the three aspirants vying for the presidency were disqualified under similar grounds, prompting legal concerns over the interpretation and enforcement of constitutional provisions.
Speaking in an interview, Shiraz Ibn Ziyaad, spokesperson for Bismark Abusa, argued that the Electoral Commission had overstepped its mandate.
“We believe there are substantive issues to be decided by a competent court. The phrase ‘executive position’ in the SRC Constitution requires interpretation by the Judicial Council,” he said.
“Our injunction application seeks to maintain the status quo and stay proceedings until the court determines whether the elections can proceed lawfully.”
Meanwhile, GIMPA management has assured the student body that the situation will be addressed in due course.
