The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has reassured media houses that journalists will have unfettered access to the collation centres during the upcoming December 7 general elections.
His statement comes after concerns were raised regarding the Electoral Commission’s (EC) initial restrictions on media access at the constituency and regional collation centres.
Journalists had also expressed frustration over the limited number of accreditations available, which was initially set at 3,308.
In response to widespread criticism, the EC revised its accreditation policy, increasing the number to 4,500.
This revision followed successful discussions between the GJA and the EC, as well as other stakeholders, including the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA).
Dwumfour confirmed that the new accreditation system would allow journalists a single pass to cover both the constituency and regional collation centres, making the process more streamlined and accessible.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Citi Breakfast Show on December 2, Dwumfour emphasized that these changes were the result of productive meetings with EC officials.
He reassured the media that the GJA would continue to advocate for the rights of journalists to ensure they have the necessary access to cover the election process comprehensively and transparently.
