The government has pledged its support to victims of the devastating fire at the Kantamanto Market, donating GH₵1 million to assist those affected by the destruction.
This follows a promise made by President John Dramani Mahama after a courtesy call from the Kantamanto Traders Association.
The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, alongside notable individuals including the Former Finance Minister and Presidential Advisor on Economy, Seth Terkper amongst others presented the donation on behalf of the President, offering sympathy for the traders’ heavy losses.
He emphasized the need for future disaster prevention and announced plans to rebuild the market as a modern, multi-purpose facility.
Reverend Opoku Afreh, Chairman of the Kantamanto Traders Association, expressed gratitude for the government’s support, revealing that over half of the market was destroyed, including $1.7 million worth of clothes and millions of cedis in sales.
He also shared that the association had secured a $100 million loan from Access Bank to build a modern market but was seeking government help to resolve a land dispute.
The GH₵1 million donation will benefit various associations within the Kantamanto Traders Association, including those representing used clothes traders, egg sellers, and shoemakers, many of whom have lost their livelihoods due to the fire.
