The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a directive for all colleges of education to remain open despite the ongoing strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG).
The strike, which began on June 14, is in response to the government’s failure to implement the arbitral awards and other conditions of service for CETAG members.
Calls have been made for the closure of the 46 colleges of education due to the strike, but GTEC has dismissed such suggestions, stating that no decision has been made on the matter.
“The Commission as of today, 16th August 2024, has not reached such a conclusion, neither has it been directed by the Honourable Minister of Education to do same,” GTEC noted in a statement.
GTEC further assured that efforts are underway to address CETAG’s concerns.
The Commission has already migrated 20 institutions, with plans to complete all 46 by the end of the month.
GTEC is in discussions with the Minister of Education to recruit 2,500 teaching staff to alleviate the workload and ensure academic activities can continue.
