The Tema Metropolitan Electoral Officer, Ofusehene Asante Manasseh, has accused members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of coercing him into declaring Ebi Bright as the MP-elect for the Tema Central constituency in the recent parliamentary elections.
In a letter addressed to Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa, Mr. Asante alleged that his life and those of his officers were threatened by NDC officials, including MP for South Dayi, Nelson Rockson Defeamekpor, and Deputy National Communications Officer Malik Basintale.
According to Mr. Asante, the threats and pressure escalated when NDC supporters besieged the collation center, chanting revolutionary songs and demanding a declaration in favor of their candidate.
Despite police presence, the intimidation persisted, with the supporters even following him to the Tema Regional Police Command.
Under duress and fearing for safety, he declared Ebi Bright the winner, even though results from two polling stations were outstanding.
He stated that the uncollated results, if included, would have given NPP candidate Charles Forson a 55-vote lead.
Mr. Asante has since requested the EC Chairperson to nullify the declaration, citing its illegality as he was not the authorized returning officer for the constituency. He emphasized that his actions were taken under extreme circumstances, prioritizing safety over procedural accuracy.
Jean Mensa has confirmed receipt of his letter, and the EC is expected to address the matter in the coming days.
