The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his party’s commitment to merging some ministries to streamline government operations and reduce expenditures.
Mr. Mahama’s announcement came during a meeting with the leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in Accra on Tuesday. The former Ghanaian president voiced concerns over the duplication of ministries with overlapping functions under the current administration led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He argued that these redundancies have resulted in unnecessary expenses, which are draining the nation’s finances.
“We will merge ministerial portfolios to prune down the number of ministries drastically. For instance, I don’t see why we have Aviation Ministry, Railways Ministry, Transport Ministry, and all the other ministries. Local Government Ministry, Business Development Ministry.
“We will reduce waste and cause overruns, institutional borrowing and breaches in public procurement rules. We will ensure compliance in internal and external control systems,” he stated.
