The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has announced plans to host presidential and vice-presidential debates in October 2024.
The IEA, responding to earlier criticism from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over a lack of engagement, has since initiated discussions with various political parties to ensure their participation.
Justice Sophia Akuffo, a distinguished fellow of the IEA, emphasized that the debates seeks to provide voters with a clearer understanding of each candidate’s policies and offer a platform for evaluating candidates.
“The IEA envisages holding the encounters in September and the debates in October and November. We will announce the precise date, time, and venues after conducting engagements with candidates and their political parties,” Akuffo stated.
She also urged the public to stay informed via the IEA website at www.ieagh.org.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has repeatedly called on NDC’s John Dramani Mahama for a debate on the economy and other national issues.
The NDC, however, has dismissed these calls, claiming that the NPP’s flagbearer is attempting to revive his “dead political career.”
As the political climate heats up, the IEA’s planned debates promise to be a significant event in shaping public opinion and guiding voter decisions ahead of the upcoming elections.
