The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has led a high-powered delegation to Bawku in the Upper East Region to assess the volatile security situation following a violent clash between local youth and security personnel that resulted in the death of one person and several injuries.
According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on April 10, 2025, the IGP’s delegation comprises senior officers from operations, investigations, and intelligence units. The visit was prompted by a confrontation earlier this week that turned deadly, claiming the life of 27-year-old Fuseini Iddrisu and leaving five others injured, including a police officer and an immigration officer. All injured persons are currently receiving medical treatment.
The statement confirmed that calm was restored to Bawku and its environs on April 9 through a coordinated operation by the Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces.
However, the violence left behind significant damage. The police revealed that two police vehicles were destroyed, along with a rented police accommodation in Binduri and the private homes of several police officers.
“While at Bawku, the IGP and his team will also commiserate with the deceased family, visit the injured persons on admission and reach out to officers who lost their properties as a result of the violence,” the Police Service noted.
The service reassured the public that security has since been heightened in the area, with joint Police-Military patrols actively ongoing to ensure continued peace and stability.
As tensions ease, the Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to working closely with the Ghana Armed Forces, traditional authorities, opinion leaders, and all relevant stakeholders to preserve peace and restore public confidence in Bawku.
The situation in Bawku remains a critical concern for national security authorities, who continue to monitor developments closely amid ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions in the conflict-prone region.
