The Ghana Police Service has raised alarm over increasing attacks targeting its personnel and their families in Bawku and nearby areas in the Upper East Region.
In response to the worsening security situation, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has imposed a ban on the movement of police officers and their relatives into Bawku and its environs.
This directive follows the recent killing of two plain-clothed officers who were ambushed while travelling on a motorbike in Binduri, a nearby community.
To safeguard officers already deployed in the area, the IGP has instructed them to wear full protective gear and ensure movement only under the protection of armoured vehicle escorts.
This heightened security protocol comes in the wake of heightened tensions after allegations surfaced that police personnel were involved in the death of a local youth leader.
The situation has stirred unrest, prompting the IGP’s earlier visit to Bawku to appeal for calm.
Meanwhile, a highly anticipated press conference scheduled for 9 a.m. on Tuesday to address the Bawku situation was abruptly canceled without explanation.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as efforts are intensified to restore stability in the troubled region.
