John Dramani Mahama has been officially sworn in as the 6th President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, marking his return to the presidency after winning the 2024 general elections.
The swearing-in ceremony, held on January 7, 2025, was attended by dignitaries, party supporters, and international observers.
President Mahama, running on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured massive victory alongside his running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who has been sworn in as Ghana’s Vice President.
He made history in 2020 when he selected Professor Opoku-Agyemang as the first female running mate for a major political party.
Though they lost the 2020 elections, Mahama’s decision to select her again in 2024 proved instrumental in their victory.
Their triumph reflects the NDC’s vision for progressive governance and gender equality, with the new administration vowing to prioritize national unity and development.
The ceremony included the administration of the oath of office by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
After taking the oath, President Mahama signed the official oath book, symbolizing his acceptance of the role and his allegiance to the Constitution.
In his inaugural speech, Mahama expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for their trust, promising to govern with integrity and focus on policies that benefit all citizens. He reiterated his commitment to tackling economic challenges, improving education, and creating opportunities for the youth.
Mahama’s return to the presidency also marks the beginning of a new chapter in Ghana’s political history.
