Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stepped in to assist traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Kantamanto Market with a significant donation of 250 packets of roofing sheets, totaling 5,000 pieces, along with ridge caps.
The donation, aimed at aiding reconstruction efforts, was presented on his behalf by former Greater Accra Regional Minister Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover.
This gesture follows an earlier cash contribution of GH¢200,000 by Dr. Bawumia to support the traders’ recovery.
Speaking during the presentation, Titus Glover emphasized the importance of traders securing insurance for their businesses to mitigate the impact of future disasters.
He also highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to enhancing security at the market, announcing plans to install CCTV cameras upon the completion of the reconstruction.
“These cameras, referred to as ‘silent police,’ will ensure 24-hour monitoring and strengthen security,” Glover stated. He urged traders to take insurance coverage seriously while also organizing their own internal security measures.
Yaw Sarpong, Financial Secretary of the Kantamanto Market, expressed profound gratitude on behalf of the traders for the generous support.
He acknowledged the roofing sheets, cash, and forthcoming security measures as critical to restoring the market’s operations.
As the reconstruction begins, the traders are hopeful that these contributions will not only help rebuild their businesses but also fortify the market against future calamities.
