Lando Norris clinched his maiden Formula 1 world championship in dramatic fashion on Sunday, finishing third in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to secure the points he needed to edge Max Verstappen by just two points in the final standings.
The 26-year-old Briton, overcome with emotion after crossing the line, becomes the 11th British driver to win the championship and the first McLaren world champion since 2008. His achievement also completes McLaren’s first drivers’ and constructors’ double since 1998.
Verstappen, determined to push the title fight to the final lap, won the race to claim his eighth victory of the season—one more than both Norris and McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. But McLaren had the advantage throughout the tense finale, with Piastri running in second place and ready to shield Norris if circumstances required.
Norris, who endured a difficult start to the season before producing a superb second-half charge, held his nerve under intense pressure to secure the podium finish that sealed his championship dream.
Reflecting on the emotional moment, the new world champion said:
“I’ve not cried in a while and I didn’t think I would cry but I did. I mean, it feels amazing, I now know what Max feels like. I want to congratulate Max and Oscar, my two biggest competitors the whole season.
“It’s been a pleasure to race against both of them and an honour, I’ve learned a lot from both of them as well.
“I’ve enjoyed it and it has been a long year but we did it and I’m so proud of everyone.”
The victory marks a defining milestone in Norris’ career and a powerful statement from McLaren, who now head into the next season with renewed confidence and momentum.
