A petition calling for the immediate removal of Auditor General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu has been officially submitted to President John Dramani Mahama.
The petition, filed on April 3, 2025, by the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), alleges high crimes, misconduct, abuse of office, and constitutional violations by Mr. Asiedu.
ASEPA has urged the President to invoke Article 187(13) of the 1992 Constitution, which outlines the legal framework for removing the Auditor General from office.
According to ASEPA, Mr. Asiedu’s alleged infractions include failure to comply with Supreme Court directives, colluding with the Audit Service Board to undermine parliamentary authority, unlawful retention of public funds, and abuse of discretionary powers.
“The constitutional processes for the removal of the Auditor General from office under Article 187(13) are the same as those for the removal of the Chief Justice under Article 146,” ASEPA’s Executive Director, Mr. Mensah Thompson, emphasized in the petition.
The group insists that the allegations constitute a serious breach of constitutional and legal obligations, warranting immediate action by the President.
The petition, which was filed at Jubilee House, marks the beginning of a constitutional process that could lead to the Auditor General’s dismissal.
ASEPA maintains that these allegations present compelling grounds for Mr. Asiedu’s removal, stressing that upholding accountability in public office is essential to maintaining democratic governance.
As the petition gains public attention, all eyes are now on President Mahama to determine the next steps in addressing these serious allegations.
