A political campaign walk in Mamobi, Accra, on Sunday turned chaotic, leaving two people shot and four others injured in what was initially intended to be a peaceful event.
The incident occurred during a routine weekend keep-fit walk, organised by both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as part of their ongoing political campaigns.
What began as a harmless campaign quickly escalated into violence when supporters from both parties clashed.
According to eyewitness accounts, the conflict arose when a group of motorbike riders, allegedly from the NDC, encountered NPP supporters during the walk.
Tensions heightened as both groups reportedly argued over which side would pass through a particular area first.
“After our peace walk, it is rather unfortunate that this happened,” said one eyewitness, who claimed that NDC motorbike riders confronted NPP supporters.
The situation took a dangerous turn when one of the NPP supporters allegedly brandished a pistol and fired several shots.
Two of the victims were immediately rushed to the Police Hospital, while four others received treatment at the Mamobi Hospital.
The police are investigating the altercation, which has raised concerns over the increasing tensions between the two rival political parties in the lead-up to upcoming elections.
