Manchester United have moved quickly to steady the ship following recent changes at the club, with Michael Carrick agreeing to take charge as interim head coach.
The former United and England midfielder reached an agreement with the club late on Monday night, with an official announcement expected on Tuesday once all contractual formalities are completed.
Carrick steps into the role after United parted ways with Ruben Amorim earlier this month, ending the Portuguese coach’s 14-month spell at Old Trafford. Darren Fletcher had overseen the team on a temporary basis for two matches while the club finalised its plans.
The 43-year-old will take his place on the touchline for one of English football’s biggest fixtures, as United prepare to host Manchester City in Saturday’s Premier League derby at Old Trafford.
Carrick is expected to be supported by an experienced backroom team. Former England assistant manager Steve Holland is set to act as his assistant, while Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion will also form part of the coaching staff.
The interim appointment gives United a familiar face in the dugout as they look to stabilise performances and navigate a crucial period of the season, starting with the high-stakes clash against their city rivals.
