Tragedy struck at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday, March 29, 2025, as Nigerian light-heavyweight boxer Gabriel Oluwaseun Olanrewaju, known in the ring as “Success,” passed away following an abrupt stoppage in his bout against Ghana’s Jonathan Mbanugu.
The match, a special feature on the Bel 7 Star Professional Boxing League fight night, ended in shocking fashion when Olanrewaju collapsed moments after receiving a punch from Mbanugu.
The Incident
The eight-round contest against Mbanugu, also known as “Jon Power,” who held a record of 12 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw—all 12 victories coming via knockout, began competitively. Olanrewaju landed two weak punches before Mbanugu countered with a right hand to his face.
Almost immediately, the Nigerian fighter staggered backward, fell against the ropes, and then collapsed, shocking spectators and officials alike.
As the referee began the mandatory count, Olanrewaju turned face down, with his throat resting against one of the ropes. His corner team rushed in, removing his gum shield and attempting to resuscitate him. However, his breathing appeared labored.
Emergency medical personnel swiftly transported him to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
‘Success’ the Boxer
Gabriel Olanrewaju, 40, was a Lagos-based fighter who turned professional in 2019. Before his tragic final fight, he was on a four-fight losing streak, suffering defeats to Russia’s Savely Sadoma, Ibragim Estemirov, Muibi Lekan, and Rashid Idowu.
His professional record stood at 13 wins, 9 losses, and 2 draws, with 12 of his victories coming by knockout. His career began on a promising note, securing wins in his first three fights, but he suffered his first career loss via a fourth-round technical knockout against Durodola Olanrewaju.
Notably, Olanrewaju had never won a fight outside Nigeria, losing six bouts in Russia and two at home.
