A devastating fire engulfed over 100 structures in the Kantamanto Market early on January 2, 2025, leaving traders counting their losses.
However, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries from the blaze. Desmond Ackah, Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, speaking on ABC Midday News, confirmed that the fire had been subdued after hours of effort.
“We have not recorded any injury or fatalities,” Ackah stated, emphasizing the swift action of fire personnel who battled the inferno for six continuous hours. He further mentioned that investigations have begun to determine the cause of the fire.
Ackah also noted the challenges in accessing the source of the fire, citing the dry season and the market’s wooden structures as factors that exacerbated the rapid spread of the flames.
He urged market managers to be more proactive in future, ensuring that clear escape routes are established to avoid similar incidents.
“If this fire had occurred during the day, evacuating traders would have been extremely difficult,” he added.
