The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has issued a warning that fuel stations operating without the required licenses face immediate closure and possible decommissioning.
Citing its legal authority under the National Petroleum Authority Act, 2005 (Act 691), the NPA emphasized its role in regulating all commercial activities in the downstream petroleum sector.
According to the law, no individual or company can engage in activities such as importing, exporting, transporting, storing, or selling petroleum products without a valid license from the NPA.
Only Ghanaians or foreign companies in registered joint ventures with Ghanaian partners that meet local content requirements are eligible for licensing. Additionally, licensed operators must clearly display their permits at their premises.
The NPA stressed that strict enforcement is essential to eliminate illegal operations, ensure public safety, protect consumers, and maintain trust in Ghana’s regulated petroleum market, particularly amid growing energy demand.
