Dr. Samuel Afriyie, a political science lecturer at Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), has accused the National Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of failing to perform their duties, which he believes contributed to their loss in the 2024 elections.
Speaking on ABC In The Morning, Dr. Afriyie stated, “The party executives, some of them did not work,” and added, “I think that the NPP National Executives were sleeping on their job.”
His remarks came after the NPP, led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, lost both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won the 2024 presidential race with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the vote.
Dr. Bawumia, his main rival, received 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%. Mahama’s victory is further bolstered by the NDC’s success in securing a parliamentary majority, with over 160 confirmed seats.
The election process was largely peaceful, despite some isolated incidents of violence and logistical challenges.
Dr. Bawumia conceded graciously, urging his supporters to respect the outcome and embrace unity.
“The people have spoken, and we must respect their decision,” he said.
With Mahama’s return to power, Ghana is set for a political shift, as he prepares to lead the country once again, having been sworn in on January 7, 2025.
International observers have praised the Electoral Commission’s transparency throughout the election process.
