The Convener of the anti-galamsey protest organized by the Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has been denied bail for the third time at the Circuit Court today.
The court’s decision follows an earlier refusal by both the Accra High Court and the same Circuit Court, marking a disheartening turn for Barker-Vormawor, who was arrested during the demonstration two weeks ago.
His legal struggle continues amidst opposition from the Attorney General’s Department, which blocked his application once more.
This morning, in a courtroom filled with anxious supporters, the State filed an affidavit opposing bail applications for 20 other anti-galamsey detainees, claiming they had not been served with the applications, despite records showing service on October 2.
The presiding judge ordered that the protestors’ lawyers re-serve the State to ensure no procedural missteps.
The case has been adjourned to October 9, leaving families and friends of the detainees anxiously awaiting the next legal steps.
Meanwhile, in a slight relief for the group, another detainee, Fanny Otoo, who has been sick since her arrest, was granted bail of GH¢20,000 with two sureties.
The case involving Barker-Vormawor, however, remains adjourned to October 14, 2024, deepening concerns over what many see as an ongoing denial of his rights.
