A devastating rock explosion at Gomoa Budumburam has left three dead and 39 injured, with authorities pointing to negligence as a key factor.
According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the blast, which occurred earlier than the communicated time, also lacked proper safety measures.
NADMO’s National Communications Director, George Ayisi, expressed concerns about the operator’s failure to use required moldies, essential for preventing flying debris, during the operation.
“They didn’t put in place the moldies, and they had anticipated a certain time, but it was done earlier,” Ayisi said.
The blast, part of construction work on the Kasoa to Winneba highway, had deadly consequences, with debris from the explosion striking nearby homes. Witnesses reported that the blast caused significant damage, with residents living in constant fear due to frequent rock explosions in the area.
Eyewitnesses recounted how flying debris struck homes and injured residents, with four of the severely injured rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for further treatment.
In response, the Ministry of Roads and Highways has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
The Ministry acknowledged that 21 previous controlled blasts had been safely executed at the site and assured the public of a thorough probe into this fatal occurrence.
Authorities, including NADMO and the Ghana Police Service, are collaborating to provide care for the victims and prevent future tragedies.
