The Parliament of Ghana has firmly denied reports suggesting that the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, had met with President Nana Akufo-Addo to negotiate over recent pronouncements made in response to a call by the minority caucus.
The claims, circulating in a viral video on social media, suggest that the Speaker was invited by the President to settle the matter of declaring four parliamentary seats vacant, following a statement by the Speaker on October 17, 2024.
In a statement released by the Parliament this morning, officials made it clear that the video in question, purported to show the Speaker in a recent meeting with the President, was recorded months ago.
“The video in question was taken on 4th July, 2024, when the Speaker led a delegation to present the maiden democracy cup to the President,” the statement clarified.
The government added that there is “no iota of truth in the insinuation of the circulated video,” dismissing it as an attempt to mislead the public.
The statement condemned the spread of the false narrative, calling it a “disingenuous” effort to undermine the integrity of the Speaker.
Parliament urged the public to disregard the misinformation, emphasizing that no such meeting has occurred regarding the Speaker’s October 17 pronouncement.
