The New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus has formally petitioned Speaker Alban Bagbin to reconvene Parliament, citing pressing governmental matters that require immediate attention.
Issued on October 22, the petition underscores the urgency of addressing critical issues, including tax exemptions for beneficiaries of the One-District-One-Factory programme and the approval of a $250 million International Development Association facility, among others.
“We respectfully urge you to summon Parliament for a meeting within the stipulated seven-day period,” stated Habib Iddrisu, the Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip.
In addition to financial considerations, the petition highlights several significant bills pending discussion, such as the Environmental Protection Agency Bill, the Social Protection Bill, and the Customs (Amendment) Bill, all set for deliberation.
The NPP caucus emphasized the necessity of addressing these legislative matters to ensure the government can operate effectively. “There are urgent government business matters to be deliberated on and transacted,” the petition elaborates.
Parliament’s proceedings were indefinitely adjourned on the same day the petition was submitted, following Speaker Bagbin’s acknowledgment of ongoing legal challenges regarding the composition of the House.
This situation includes the public interest surrounding the vacancies of four Members of Parliament, which has further complicated the legislative agenda.
As the NPP caucus awaits a response from the Speaker, the future of key governmental business hangs in the balance.
