Agricultural seed specialist Amos Azinyo has criticized the leadership of Ghana’s agricultural sector, accusing the government of appointing political figures rather than industry experts.
Speaking on ABC News GH on Friday, he stated, “The issue is that we have not placed our best brains into agriculture; those in there are political merchants.”
He lamented that despite Ghana having the necessary resources for seed production, the country continues to rely on imports from neighboring nations.
Azinyo stressed the need for a shift toward local seed production, urging the government to take bold steps to empower domestic producers.
“The best way to go is to incapacitate the local producers,” he noted sarcastically, pointing out the lack of investment in the sector.
He further called for a policy framework that limits excessive imports and forces local producers to capitalize on the market, ultimately boosting Ghana’s agricultural self-sufficiency.
