Political scientist Dr. Samuel Afriyie has raised concerns about the deepening political polarization within Ghana’s governance system, warning that it is negatively affecting the country’s security services.
His comments come in the wake of the dismissal of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as Inspector General of Police and the subsequent appointment of Commissioner of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno as his replacement.
The move has generated mixed public reactions, with some celebrating Dampare’s removal. However, Dr. Afriyie commended the former IGP for revitalizing the Police Service and enhancing its public image.
Dr. Afriyie lamented the extent of partisanship in governance, emphasizing that it has infiltrated every sector, including law enforcement.
“Our system is polarized in such a way that every sector of our governance system has been politicized,” he stated.
He cautioned that excessive political influence over security institutions could compromise their professionalism and credibility, calling for reforms to ensure the independence of the nation’s security agencies.
