Edward Duncan, the General Secretary of the Road Toll Workers Union, has expressed relief following the Finance Minister’s recent statement confirming the reintroduction of road tolls.
Mr. Duncan highlighted the union’s concerns during the previous government’s tenure, when the abolishment of tolls created uncertainty and financial difficulties for workers.
Speaking on ABC in the morning, he noted that the reintroduction of tolls is essential not only for the workers but also as a critical source of revenue for the country, especially amid the current financial crisis.
He expressed optimism that the current government would follow through with the policy.
“It is good news to us, because this is always what we are calling for,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Edward Duncan has urged the new government to implement automation systems that still require human involvement, particularly in the digitalization of road tolls.
He argued that the removal of tolls has led to financial hardship for many, pushing them into unqualified jobs or relocation.
Duncan believes such automation could provide employment opportunities and reduce the risk of criminal activity, and ultimately support the socio-economic welfare of Ghanaians.
