Tensions erupted in Abeka, a town within the Okaikwei Central Constituency, as residents took to the streets to protest the victory of Patrick Yaw Boamah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate in the 2024 Parliamentary Election.
The demonstrators, captured in a viral video, burned car tyres along the Abeka stretch and demanded justice for Baba Sadiq Abdulai, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate.
Protesters claim that Mr. Sadiq, initially reported as the winner, was unfairly denied victory following a re-collation exercise.
The protests followed the court-ordered re-collation of results, where the Electoral Commission (EC) declared Patrick Yaw Boamah the winner with 21,099 votes, while Baba Sadiq secured 19,368 votes.
This exercise was ordered by the Accra High Court after disputes arose in several constituencies, including Okaikwei Central.
Protesters allege irregularities in the re-collation and accuse the EC of bias, vowing to continue their fight for justice.
