The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) is calling on the government to declare a national emergency on the Accra-Kumasi Highway following a recent spate of fatal accidents.
General Secretary Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah made the call during an interview on ABC in the morning, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated government action.
His appeal follows the tragic crash that claimed the lives of 16 students, who were laid to rest in a mass burial ceremony yesterday.
Ohene-Yeboah described the highway as a “death trap,” stressing that the increasing frequency of deadly crashes on the stretch has made it unsafe for commuters.
He warned that without decisive intervention, more lives would be lost.
“The road has become a death trap,” he said, insisting that a national emergency declaration would prompt the scale of response needed to save lives and restore confidence in road safety along the corridor.
The Accra-Kumasi Highway is one of the country’s busiest transport routes, connecting major economic zones.
However, it has also become one of the deadliest, with frequent reports of head-on collisions, over-speeding, and poor road conditions.
The GRTCC believes that declaring an emergency will unlock urgent funding, enforcement, and infrastructure rehabilitation needed to curb the carnage.
