The Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association has raised concerns over unpaid allowance arrears of GHS 10,646 owed to its members.
According to the association, the government has failed to pay them their allowances for over twelve (12) months. This delay has caused significant hardship, forcing many to struggle with basic living expenses and compromising their ability to perform their duties effectively.
Speaking in an interview with ABC News GH, Awudu Razak Issifu, the Public Relations Officer of the association, revealed that each rotational nurse and midwife is owed GHS 10,646 in outstanding payments.
“We started our rotation on July 3, 2023 and as things stand now, we’ve done twelve good months but we haven’t been paid a single allowance. Per our data, the government owes each rotational nurse and midwife an average amount of GHS 10,646.
He further disclosed that all efforts to engage the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders in a dialogue to have this matter resolved have proven futile.
“On several occasions, we tried engaging the ministries in a dialogue but we did not receive any positive feedback from them. So, we proceeded to do a press conference on Tueday, July 16, and are awaiting feedbac from them.
Issifu called on the government and relevant authorities to address the issue promptly, urging them to prioritize the payment of these allowances. The Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association has also hinted at the possibility of industrial action if the situation is not resolved soon.
The Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service have yet to respond to the demands of the association.
