Security expert Richard Kumadoe has commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, for his decision to deploy 5,000 police officers to Akwatia ahead of the upcoming by-election.
According to him, the move is a bold step towards tackling vigilantism and preventing electoral violence in Ghana.
Speaking on ABC in the morning, Mr. Kumadoe stressed that the heavy security presence demonstrates the police service’s readiness to clamp down on potential troublemakers.
He explained that ensuring an incident-free by-election in Akwatia would mark a major turning point in Ghana’s fight against election-related violence.
“This shows that the police is ready and they are ready to take on anyone who wants to cause trouble,” he said, adding that the stakes are high given Akwatia’s history of electoral tensions.
Mr. Kumadoe expressed optimism that the IGP’s strategy, if successful, could serve as a roadmap for curbing violent elections nationwide.
He noted that the police must maintain vigilance and consistency beyond Akwatia to build public confidence in future electoral processes.
“It is important he gets it right so that this becomes a roadmap for curbing violent elections in Ghana,” he emphasized.
