Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has declined a request from the Majority to recall Parliament ahead of the December 7 general elections.
In a memo dated November 26, 2024, the Speaker explained that the House would resume after the elections to address essential matters, ensuring a smooth transition to the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
He emphasized the importance of parliamentary decorum, stating, “The national interest would better be served if members exhibit conduct of honour, empathy, and humility in the performance of their duties.”
Addressing Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Speaker Bagbin underscored the significance of the election period in Ghana’s democratic process.
He noted that this season allows political parties and candidates to present their manifestos to the electorate and account for their stewardship.
“This period is for the government, parties, and both presidential and parliamentary candidates to justify how the mandate given them by voters has been applied to the benefit of the people,” Bagbin stated.
The Speaker’s decision aligns with calls from the Minority NDC caucus, who urged him to reject the recall request made by NPP MPs.
The parliamentary calendar is traditionally structured to accommodate election activities, ensuring representatives have time to engage with constituents.
Bagbin assured that Parliament would reconvene post-elections to complete outstanding matters critical to the nation’s governance.
