Education stakeholders have called for a renewed focus on mathematics education in Ghana, emphasizing its role in national development and Africa’s progress.
Speaking at the International Mathematics Day celebration, themed “Playing with Maths,” Ga East Municipal Education Director, Eric Sey, highlighted the collective responsibility in improving mathematics education.
“Mathematics is a shared responsibility. It can’t be solved by one person alone,” he stated. Sey stressed the need to develop students’ interest in the subject early on, ensuring they understand its importance from the beginning.
The event featured a mathematics contest, engaging students in problem-solving activities. Bishop Dr. Peter Osei Akoto, CEO of Mezzo House and a member of the organizing team, revealed plans to make the initiative an annual event.
“This year is just the beginning. We are planning to expand the program to transform mathematics education, not only in Ghana but across Africa,” he said.
Dr. Akoto further emphasized the significance of mathematics in nation-building. “A nation is built with mathematics. If Africa focuses on strengthening mathematics education for our children, we know we are going places,” he remarked.
The celebration underscored the urgency for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders to prioritize mathematics education as a key pillar for economic and technological advancement.
