Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has conceded defeat to former President John Dramani Mahama, acknowledging his opponent’s commanding lead in early election results.
The announcement comes as Ghanaians await the final official results of the December 7, 2024, presidential and legislative elections.
Early projections indicate Mahama, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is poised to win with approximately 52.7% of the vote, while Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) trails with 40.1%.
These figures align with pre-election polls, including a survey by Global InfoAnalytics conducted in late October, which predicted a decisive victory for Mahama.
The election took place against the backdrop of Ghana’s worst economic crisis in a generation, marked by surging inflation and widespread unemployment.
The low voter turnout reflects public dissatisfaction amid economic hardships.
Mahama’s apparent victory signals a potential shift in Ghana’s political landscape as citizens seek solutions to the pressing economic challenges. Official results from the Electoral Commission are expected shortly to confirm the outcome.
