Tragedy struck the Gbawe Zero Machandi Estate in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality on Monday, August 25, 2025, after two children, aged five and seven, were discovered dead in an uncovered drainage system.
The victims had reportedly gone missing on Sunday and were last seen playing near the drain before their lifeless bodies were later found, throwing the entire community into grief.
Residents, still shaken by the incident, described the drainage as a long-standing “death trap” and expressed frustration over the authorities’ failure to respond to repeated complaints.
They noted that several appeals had been made to have the structure covered or properly fixed, but no action was taken despite the obvious danger it posed to the community, particularly children.
