The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced a delay in releasing the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, citing unresolved financial challenges.
John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, revealed during an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show that the council owes GH₵25 million to technicians responsible for maintaining critical equipment used in the grading process.
“Our scanners, essential for marking objective questions, need urgent repairs, but the technicians have suspended their services due to the debt. Private schools pay their fees directly, but the government handles payments for public school candidates. Until these monies are paid, we cannot release the results,” Mr. Kapi explained.
He added that WAEC had previously issued a statement about the financial challenges, which remain unresolved.
The situation has drawn attention from Parliament, with the Minority demanding that the Finance and Education Ministers appear before the House to address the government’s indebtedness to WAEC.
Mr. Kapi emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating that without immediate financial commitments, WAEC cannot move forward with the results’ release, leaving candidates and their families in limbo.
