The Electoral Commission (EC) has issued a statement to address recent media reports suggesting that it was creating some 25 new constituencies. In the statement, the EC clarified that it was, in fact, creating only one new constituency, the Guan constituency, located in the Oti Region.
The announcement comes in response to discussions in the media, where reports had surfaced claiming that the Electoral Commission was in the process of establishing 25 new constituencies. However, the EC has now officially corrected this misinformation.
In the press statement issued on Tuesday, the Electoral Commission emphasized that the creation of the Guan constituency in the Oti Region was the only new constituency being established. The EC outlined the decision-making process and criteria for constituency creation, explaining that it is a meticulous process that takes into account factors such as population size, geographical boundaries, and administrative convenience.
According to the statement, the creation of the Guan constituency is consistent with these criteria and aims to facilitate better representation and governance in the area. It is a measure intended to promote fair and equitable political representation within the Oti Region.
The Electoral Commission also urged the public to disregard such false and inaccurate statements.
