The Director of Public Relations at Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Stanley Martey, has explained that the shutdown of the Weija treatment plant was caused by multiple perforations in the company’s transmission lines.
According to him, the affected pipelines are very old and have simply outlived their lifespan. He noted that although the lines are old and prone to damage, the company continues to manage and maintain them because replacing old pipes are capital-intensive.
“The cause of the perforations are just because we have very old pipelines, they have outlived their Life Span but we are still managing and maintaining them because to change everything is capital intensive” he explained on ABC In the Morning.
In a statement issued on Tuesday 2nd December 2025, the Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Accra West Region explained that one of the key pipelines transporting treated water from the plant to western parts of Accra has developed severe perforations.

According to GWL, this is to enable them undertake urgent repair works due to a major faulty pipeline.
The Twelve hour repair window is expected to take place on Thursday 4th December, 2025 from 6am to 6pm.
Communities expected to be affected include Korle-Bu, Dansoman, Mamprobi, parts of Weija, Gbawe, Malam, Anyaa, Kwashieman, Ablekuma, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Tesano, Odorkor, Sowutuom, Lapaz, parts of Achimota, the North Industrial Area, and adjoining communities.
Households and businesses within the affected catchment areas are urged to store adequate water ahead of the shutdown.
Management of Ghana Water Limited added that they regret any inconvenience that may arise as a result of the shutdown
