The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has launched a blistering attack on the Akufo-Addo administration, accusing it of failing to account for the billions borrowed under its leadership and making questionable claims about road construction.
Louisa Kwakye, a member of the NDC communications team, speaking on ABC Midday on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, highlighted the poor state of infrastructure in the Eastern Region, particularly the Kumasi Highway, which she described as “in a very deplorable state.”
She asked pointedly, “If indeed you have constructed over 12,000 kilometers of asphalted roads, where are the roads?”
As part of his five-day campaign tour in the Eastern Region, former President John Dramani Mahama has been engaging communities and inspecting their challenges.
Louisa Kwakye noted that Mahama’s focus has been on the impact of illegal mining, or galamsey, on agriculture, the region’s backbone. She criticized the current government for failing to combat the menace, even in President Akufo-Addo’s own hometown.
“You can see how galamsey has affected the people of the Eastern Region, crippling their local economy and livelihoods,” she said, reiterating Mahama’s pledge to tackle the issue decisively.
In a scathing critique, Kwakye further questioned the government’s use of resources, raising concerns over how over $700 billion in borrowed funds have been expended.
She called on the Akufo-Addo administration to provide accountability for the staggering debt and justify its development claims.
The NDC insists that the realities on the ground, from deteriorating roads to struggling communities, paint a starkly different picture from the government’s narrative of progress.
