The Wontumi TV presenter arrested in Ejisu Krapa, Ashanti Region, on Tuesday, August 12, has not been formally charged, according to colleague and Wontumi Radio broadcaster Gordon Asare Bediako.
Speaking from the Police Headquarters in Accra, where the presenter, Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, is being held, Bediako said the arrest was carried out by armed men in hoodies, allegedly linked to National Security, who whisked the journalist away in a swift operation.
Bediako indicated that while there are threats to arraign the journalist before court, no specific offences have been communicated.
He further condemned the conduct of the security services for taking a statement from the presenter without his legal counsel present.
“We are living dangerously in Ghana,” he lamented, stressing the need for transparency in such operations.
The incident coincides with the NCA’s announcement of the suspension of nine radio stations nationwide for various regulatory breaches, including three linked to Wontumi.
The NCA said the affected stations had failed to rectify violations during the grace period, citing unauthorised STL frequencies, unapproved transmitter sites, and the absence of valid Certificates of Compliance in breach of L.I. 1991.
