Ten police officers have initiated legal action to prevent the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) from transferring them from their current posts, arguing that the directive lacks justification and is baseless.
Led by Sergeant David Ojeyim, the officers allege in court documents that they were recruited for an intelligence-gathering operation under the directive of Deputy IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
Despite the transfer orders, Deputy IGP Yohuno reportedly instructed them to disregard the directive and remain at their posts.
Sergeant Ojeyim detailed that the officers had been assigned to a team tasked with intelligence gathering following instructions from ASP Alhaji Jalil Bawa on September 26, 2024.
A WhatsApp platform was even created to facilitate effective communication for the assignment.
However, on October 1, 2024, they were informed of a transfer signal affecting the entire team, with most officers reassigned to remote areas.
“Since the team enlisted for the assignment was at the direction and instruction of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, we informed him on October 2, 2024, of the transfer signal, wherefore he directed us not to comply with same as it was dubious and without any justification,” Sergeant Ojeyim stated in the affidavit.
The officers have since been interdicted pending a service inquiry, but the disciplinary process has been paused pending the resolution of the judicial review by the High Court.
They argue that the transfers and subsequent interdictions are unjustified and have requested the court’s intervention to protect their rights and roles.
