Operatives of National Security have arrested 12 Chinese nationals and one Ghanaian in connection with the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at the Tema Port.
The arrests took place on Thursday, March 27, during an intelligence-led operation. Authorities say the suspects are linked to two aluminium smelting companies located in Shai Hills, where some of the stolen cables were being processed.
Investigations revealed that some of the missing cables, part of the stolen ECG consignment, were discovered at an aluminium smelter owned by Chinese nationals opposite the Shai Hills Game Reserve.
According to reports, the cables were being melted into aluminium bars for export, a move authorities believe was an attempt to erase any trace of the stolen goods.
Meanwhile, security officials have launched a manhunt for another Chinese national who remains at large.
40 Missing Containers Recovered
In a related development, Energy Minister John Jinapor disclosed on Thursday, March 27, that authorities had recovered 40 of the missing containers at a terminal in Kpone.
The Minister further revealed that an Indian national had been arrested in connection with the case.
“The information I got this morning is that they have traced about 40 containers to a particular terminal or warehouse in Kpone, which belongs to an Indian national. They have confiscated all the 40 containers and moved them to a secured location,” Minister Jinapor stated.
The arrested Indian businessman reportedly claimed he had legally purchased the containers in 2024, but investigations are ongoing to verify his statement.
Security agencies continue to track the remaining missing containers while working to bring all perpetrators to justice.
